DEMENTIA AUSTRALIA PAYS TRIBUTE TO PATRON ALLAN MOFFAT OBE

The motorsport legend died from Alzheimer’s disease on 22 November

Dementia Australia has paid tribute to iconic motorsport figure and Dementia Australia Patron Allan Moffat OBE following his passing, aged 86.
The motorsport legend was a Patron of Dementia Australia following his decision in 2019 to speak out publicly about his diagnosis to help others know they are not alone and to raise awareness and funds across the racing community and beyond.
His honesty, determination and generosity inspired many and strengthened understanding of dementia in Australia.
As Patron, Allan – together with his loyal support network – gave so much of himself to champion the cause, and since 2023, Dementia Australia has been honoured to be the nominated charity partner of the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 in Allan’s honour.
The Supercars events have created powerful moments of connection trackside and helped raise vital awareness about dementia.
Dementia Australia Chief Executive Officer, Professor Tanya Buchanan, acknowledged Allan’s extraordinary advocacy.
“Allan was admired and respected not only as an icon of Australian motorsport, but also as an advocate who used his profile to make a meaningful difference for people of all ages living with dementia, their families and carers,” Professor Buchanan said.
“Allan’s support of our work including Memory Walk and Jog events, fundraising initiatives, media stories and social media posts has made a difference in many ways to the lives of people impacted by dementia.
“His legacy of honesty, courage and generosity will continue to help families facing dementia for years to come.”
Allan’s long-time manager Phil Grant reflected on Allan’s extraordinary role in championing dementia awareness.
“Allan was so proud to be a Patron for Dementia Australia and in his honour, we encourage all his fans to donate in his name through the Allan Moffat Foundation to continue his legacy,” Phil said.
Dementia Australia extends its deepest sympathies to Allan’s family, friends and loyal supporters and acknowledges the steadfast friendship and careful stewardship of Phil Grant, and the support of Allan’s son, Andrew, in enabling the Allan Moffat Foundation to continue this important work.
Following his passing, Allan was honoured with a Victorian State Memorial Service at Melbourne Town Hall.
Dementia Australia acknowledges the condolences and support from The Honourable Jacinta Allan MP, Premier of Victoria, the Victorian State Government and Australian Federal Government in remembering Allan’s extraordinary career and dementia advocacy.
Dementia Australia also extends thanks to the Moffat family for their request, that in lieu of flowers, tributes and donations were to go to the Allan Moffat Foundation via www.fundraising.dementia.org.au/allan-moffat to continue Allan’s legacy in supporting people living with dementia, their families and carers.
Dementia Australia is the source of trusted information, education and services for the estimated more than 433,300 Australians living with dementia, and the more than 1.7 million people involved in their care.
The AAA Magazine and the AAAA extends its deepest condolences to Allan’s friends and family on his passing.
