SHIFTING DEMAND IN BULL BARS
Vikor Industries says more and more 4×4 owners are choosing “purposeful design”
The Australian 4×4 aftermarket is experiencing a noticeable shift in customer demand.
While full loop bull bars have long represented maximum protection, more vehicle owners are now requesting streamlined alternatives that balance strength, weight and design.
For workshops and retailers, understanding this shift is key to staying ahead of the market.
“Customer preferences in the 4×4 sector are evolving. The traditional triple-loop bull bar was once the only logical choice, particularly for rural operators and dedicated tourers,” Vikor Industries Co-Founder, Stan Harrison, said.
“However, today’s 4×4 owner is increasingly urban-based, using their vehicle as a weekday commuter and a weekend escape tool.
“This shift in vehicle use is reshaping buying decisions.
“At Vikor Industries, we are seeing growing demand for ‘No-Loop’ and ‘Single Loop’ bull bar configurations that deliver engineered protection without unnecessary bulk.
“Customers are asking more informed questions about weight, vehicle dynamics and compatibility with advanced driver assistance systems.”
Late-model dual cabs and wagons are more refined than ever and excessive frontal weight can influence suspension performance, steering feel and long-term component wear.
“Buyers are actively seeking lighter, more balanced solutions that retain winch compatibility, rated recovery integration and full airbag compliance, but executed with greater design intent,” Stan said.
“A clear example of this shift came with the release of the Toyota Hilux N90.
“Its bold factory styling divided opinion at launch, yet it also presented opportunity.
“Rather than adapting a traditional one-style-fits-all bar, we saw the chance to completely reimagine the vehicle’s front end through a full bumper replacement solution.
“This approach allowed the no-loop design language to properly integrate with the vehicle, enhancing its stance and visual identity rather than simply adding protection over the top.”
Aesthetic demand is also now a primary driver.
“Owners investing in premium vehicles want accessories that complement factory styling, preserve camera visibility and maintain airflow – not compromise them,” Stan said.
“Designing a bar specifically for the vehicle platform, rather than modifying an existing format, is becoming increasingly important.
“Importantly, this trend does not signal reduced expectations around capability. It reflects a more educated buyer who wants protection engineered to suit how the vehicle is realistically used.”
For trade businesses, Stan says this represents opportunity.
“Stocking performance-driven, design-led protection allows workshops to meet changing customer expectations while differentiating from competitors still focused solely on traditional heavy-duty offerings,” Stan said.
“Market demand is shifting, and the aftermarket that responds to that shift will lead the next phase of 4×4 evolution.”
