In the automotive aftermarket, the right towbar is not always the standard towbar

Vehicles are increasingly being configured around a job or lifestyle, with longer trays, full canopies, fleet bodies, roof-mounted equipment, and serious off-road accessories.
For TAG Towbars, that has meant developing a range that goes well beyond a conventional square-receiver solution.
The company says a good example is the TAG Extended range. Designed for vehicles fitted with longer-than-standard trays or canopies, the complete towbar extends rearward while maintaining the vehicle’s full rated towing capacity.
TAG Towbars says that distinction matters, as simply adding an extended hitch to a standard towbar can reduce its maximum towing capacity, making a purpose-designed extended towbar the better solution where rear bodywork extends beyond the factory position.
TAG Extended towbars are designed, tested, and manufactured in Brisbane as part of TAG’s Australian Made towbar range.
Commercial vehicles such as the Toyota HiAce, Ford Transit, LDV Deliver 7, and LDV Deliver 9 bring a different set of requirements.
TAG notes that its Rear Step and Van Fleet range includes galvanised rear steps supplied either as a stand-alone step or integrated with a towbar.
It says that for technicians, couriers, and other van operators carrying equipment on the roof, the step provides a practical platform for loading and access.
Depending on the vehicle, TAG can also provide sensor extension solutions and rear sensor relocation brackets to accommodate the changed rear configuration.
At the other end of the spectrum is TAG XR – Extreme Recovery.
Developed for 4WDs, trade, and fleet vehicles, and serious off-road applications, TAG Towbars explains that the TAG XR combines a towbar with integrated rated recovery points.
The range incorporates reinforced cross members, additional clearance, improved departure angles, and top-mounted trailer plug brackets where possible.
Weight-conscious design also helps manage GVM considerations; recovery points feature bevelled edges designed with soft-shackle use in mind; and a rugged textured powder-coated finish and considered styling distinguish XR from TAG’s conventional Heavy-Duty range.
The towbar range sits alongside TAG’s extensive vehicle-specific direct-fit wiring solutions, including plug-and-play, CAN, and non-CAN applications.
The harnesses are engineered and tested in-house in Brisbane, with TAG stating these offerings ensure it can give workshops access to a towing solution that extends well beyond the towbar itself.
