GEARUP AUTO CAREERS BUILDING MOMENTUM

Australia’s automotive industry is facing a workforce turning point — and this time, the momentum is real

Since launching in mid-2025, the GearUp Auto Careers Initiative says it has been steadily gaining traction as a national platform designed to tackle the skills shortage by inspiring the next generation of automotive professionals.
What began with a bold debut in Adelaide has since rolled out across the country, with major activations at the Brisbane and Sydney Careers and Employment Expos.
Those behind the initiative say the results have been undeniable: tens of thousands of attendees, thousands taking on the challenge, and countless meaningful conversations with students, teachers, jobseekers and parents eager to learn more about automotive careers.
At each event, GearUp Auto Careers delivered a hands-on experience that brought trade careers to life, through a now-iconic Tesla Wheel Change Challenge, engaging live demos, and down-to-earth conversations.
Attendees lined up to try the tools, feel the pace of real-world work, and talk to the people who do it every day.
Backed by industry, driven by collaboration
GearUp is not acting alone, with the initiative supported on the ground by a growing list of forward-thinking organisations and industry leaders, including:
• Repco Authorised Service, who have consistently shown up with Business Development Specialists and local workshop owners to engage with future talent face-to-face.
• JAX Tyre & Auto, who have helped spark conversations about career pathways across their national network.
• Pedders Suspension and Brakes, who brought energy, competitions, and direct insight into the specialist side of the industry.
• And brand sponsors including Repco, Penrite, and SP Tools, whose support has been instrumental in powering the activation, amplifying the message, and helping create a hands-on experience that truly connects.

“Collaboration like this is exactly what GearUp Auto Careers was built on,” Mechanic.com.au General Manager, Ryan Davis, said.
“We’re not just raising awareness about career opportunities — we’re showing what’s possible when the industry comes together with a shared purpose.”
With each activation, Ryan says GearUp Auto Careers is capturing the attention of thousands of Australians who may never have otherwise considered a future in automotive – and he states the impact is lasting, both in the minds of attendees and in the leads being generated for workshops who are ready to recruit.
As a foundational partner of GearUP, the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) continues to play a critical role in helping steer the long-term vision.
“Their early support having laid the groundwork for what’s quickly becoming one of the most important workforce development movements in the sector,” Ryan said.

Looking ahead
With the 2025 expo season now complete, GearUp is shifting gears toward a national recruitment campaign for 2026 — targeting school leavers, parents, and career changers through digital outreach, school engagement, and media-led campaigns.
“For the initiative to scale and succeed, continued industry support is essential. Whether you’re a small workshop, a parts manufacturer, or a national brand, there’s a place for you in this movement,” Ryan said.
“Because solving the skills crisis isn’t just about filling roles. It is about building an industry future generations will be proud to join.”
