Box Hill TAFE has a strong reputation for automotive training and producing some of the brightest young stars of the industry

The Box Hill Institute of TAFE is a leading provider of automotive apprentice training in Victoria and offers automotive training courses from Certificate II through to Diploma level.
The automotive industry has changed as technology has advanced and what used to require purely mechanical skills now demands skills in electronic programming, researching, and vehicle specific training.
The TAFE can assist members of the automotive aftermarket who are looking to take on apprentices with relevant skills.
It achieves this by connecting them with students who have completed Certificate II pre-apprenticeship training and who are seeking employment.
The TAFE can also provide ongoing guidance and support.
This is particularly relevant given the Federal Government’s announcements out of the recent Budget around subsidies for industry to employ apprentices and trainees (see page 6 of this magazine).
One of the companies Box Hill TAFE has been working with is Ritters, Australia’s largest independent Land Rover and Range Rover specialist.
For many years, Box Hill TAFE has trained all of Ritters’ apprentices – an important job, given that the company’s hand-picked staff are the heart of its business.
Ritters Service Manager Owen Grace believes taking on apprentices is a key strategy to ensuring the business has specialised mechanics, which are otherwise difficult to find, and he has been impressed with the quality of apprentices who have completed their training at Box Hill TAFE.
“The most important thing (in an apprentice) is an enquiring mind, a willingness to learn, and a good work ethic. Ideally (they have) some mechanical talent,” Owen said.
“The apprentices supplied to us from Box Hill TAFE have always had these attributes in spades.
“Box Hill TAFE ensures that its apprentices leave its faculty with the skills needed to perform the job and their ongoing support has been second to none.
“We would highly recommend Box Hill TAFE to anyone in the automotive aftermarket looking to employ an apprentice.”
Box Hill TAFE offers automotive courses from certificates to diplomas, including specialist automotive courses like the VicRoads licenced vehicle courses which allow for qualified automotive technicians to become licenced vehicle testers able to issue roadworthy certificates in Victoria.
The TAFE also provides the opportunity for existing mechanics and apprentices to enhance their skills by taking on extra training.
With summer approaching, it’s the perfect time to enrol in the popular Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning Technology (AUR20218) course to qualify for the ARCTICK refrigerant handling licence needed to service and repair air conditioning systems in automotive vehicles.
The theory component of this course is available online and the course is currently a part of the Victorian Government’s Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative.
Alternatively, Box Hill TAFE has a number of students that have just completed their Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning Technology and are ready for work.
Box Hill TAFE teaches almost 40,000 students around the world each year, preparing them for rapidly-changing industries, teaching skills that are in demand and ensuring they are ready for the jobs of the future.
It works hand-in-hand with industry and leading brands to create world-class facilities that simulate the workplace and its teachers are industry experts, dedicated to their students’ success.
