WHY EXTENDING CAR SERVICE INTERVALS IS A RISKY MOVE

With the costs of living skyrocketing, many car owners are tempted to delay regular servicing to save time and money

However, extending service intervals beyond what’s recommended by manufacturers can have serious consequences, particularly in turbocharged vehicles.
JLM Lubricants says that one of the most critical parts of regular car maintenance is lubrication.
Over time, engine oil will degrade, losing its lubricating properties. This is especially problematic for turbocharged engines, which operate at much higher temperatures and pressures than naturally aspirated engines.
Turbochargers rely on a steady flow of clean, high-quality oil for both cooling and lubrication. When that oil deteriorates, it can cause premature turbo wear or even total turbo failure.

Change and flush
There are many factors that contribute to the oil degradation, from oxidation to thermal breakdown and contamination.
Regular oil changes ensure the lubricating properties of the oil are retained and using quality oil flush at every service helps dissolve old oil remnants and accumulated dirt in the engine.
JLM says a good oil flush should clean all essential engine components such as cylinder walls, pistons, piston rings, valves, valve guides and the combustion chamber.

Service Plus
While a simple oil flush and change is adequate for most applications, surveys have shown that customers appreciate and value preventative maintenance.
JLM says adding an oil additive like the JLM Bortec Friction Reduction provides an additional level of protection by minimising frictional resistance between moving parts.
Alternatively, a JLM Ceramic Engine Protector creates a heat-resistant coating on the engine’s internal components, reducing friction and wear.
Turbocharged diesel cars will benefit from the JLM Turbo Cleaner that gets rid of dirt and grime from the turbocharger, prolonging its life and ensuring problem-free operation.

All clogged up
Clogged filters are another major concern. Modern engines are precision machines. Small disruptions in oil supply, airflow, or fuel delivery can have adverse effects on efficiency, emissions, and reliability.
Diesel engines rely on high-pressure fuel systems that are particularly sensitive to contamination. A clogged fuel filter can restrict flow, causing poor performance, and rough idling.
Filter inspection and maintenance should be a part of every service. JLM says that once again, using quality additives like JLM Injection Cleaner, Fuel System Cleaner or EGR / DPF Cleaner not only helps the car perform at its best, but prevents bigger problems down the road.
Regular servicing isn’t just routine, it is essential. Skipping it might save a few dollars today, but it risks far greater costs down the road.
Today’s customers, more than ever, are looking for value, and preventative maintenance provides that by protecting the car, and the owner’s wallet from unexpected future blow-outs.
The Dutch-based JLM Lubricants is one of Europe’s premium fuel additive and lubricant brands. It is distributed in Australia and New Zealand by GCG Turbochargers.
