TERRAIN TAMER HUT WINS STATE BUILDING AWARD

The high country landmark recreation in the city has been recognised with a prestigious award

A modern recreation of the famed Victorian High Country landmark Craig’s Hut has taken out an Australian Institute of Building Professional Excellence award, one of the highest-level awards available in the state.
The building, which is situated on Sunshine Road, Tottenham, in Melbourne’s inner west, was awarded the “Professional Excellence Award for Project Management” in July, for work done by Building Principals Chief Executive Officer, Adam Wright, and Senior Project Manager, James Matthews.
Completed in late 2022, the “Terrain Tamer Hut” building is built on the site of 4WD spare parts company, The Don Kyatt Group, and was a passion project for Managing Director Frank Hutchinson, who was inspired by his time spent on 4WDriving trips in the Mt Stirling and Bulla areas.
The building acts as an expanded modern recreation of the iconic Craig’s Hut, which was originally constructed in Victoria’s High Country as a set for the 1982 film The Man from Snowy River, and reopened in 2008 after having to be rebuilt due to damage caused by local bushfires.

Terrain Tamer’s iteration expands on the landmark with the addition of extra rooms, toilets, and an industrial kitchen to serve as a setting for industry functions, hosting visitors and company training or conferences.
The rustic outer features of the building’s façade, including custom made wrought iron features sourced from local blacksmiths, as well as complementary landscaping, draw heavily on the design of the original hut, offering a striking visual feature in contrast to the busy urban area.
Building Principals managed the entire project, from Town Planning and Master Site Plan, engaging Riccon as the project builders, and the eventual handover of keys at completion. It was judged on a number of criteria, including among others, ‘Project Complexity’, ‘Innovative Approach’, ‘Benefit to the Community’ and ‘Project Quality’, by a panel of independent experts.
The project will now progress as a nominee for the same award at the national level.
